Swedish doom and stoner rock band New Mexican Doom Cult are streaming their entire new album Ziggurat ahead of its official release on Friday, January 23 via Majestic Mountain Records. The full record is currently available to hear through Decibel Magazine, giving listeners an early dive into the band’s heaviest and most focused work to date.
Despite their name, New Mexican Doom Cult hail from Gävle, Sweden, far removed from desert heat. Still, their sound leans hard into dry, crushing doom, built on thick fuzz, slow-burning riffs, and ritualistic pacing. Ziggurat channels classic stoner doom influences while locking into a tighter, more deliberate structure across its seven tracks. The album feels dense and grounded, balancing repetition and groove with weight and atmosphere.
The band first surfaced in 2019 with the single “The Passage,” a bleak and isolated track rooted in themes of darkness and survival. That sense of storytelling continued with the 2021 singles “Mark of Cain” and “The Abyss,” which helped define the band’s fixation on biblical imagery, looming dread, and massive guitar tones. Their 2023 full-length Necropolis, released through Ozium Records, marked a major step forward, earning attention for its sprawling arrangements and hypnotic heaviness.
Later that same year, From the Crypt collected the band’s earliest recordings, presenting raw tales of monsters, cults, and ancient myth. Those tracks made it clear that doom, atmosphere, and narrative have always been central to the project.
Now signed to Majestic Mountain Records, New Mexican Doom Cult return with Ziggurat, an album shaped by imagery drawn from ancient Mesopotamian temples. The record feels slow, looming, and ceremonial, like a structure rising piece by piece under a darkened sky. Production duties were handled by Jonas Strömberg and guitarist Nils Ahnland at Slowbeat Studio, with drums recorded by Marcus Källström. The sound is thick and unpolished, letting riffs breathe while keeping the weight intact.
The band describe Ziggurat as a return from the dust and rubble, presenting it as another chapter in their ongoing descent into heaviness. With the full album now streaming and its official release just days away, Ziggurat stands as a clear statement of intent—focused, myth-driven doom built to crush slowly and completely.
