Boston effort inspires national coat collection. More at BIGWARMUP.com.

There are more than 3.5 million homeless women, men and children in the United States - each facing a cold winter. Lands End has joined with the National Coalition for the Homeless to make a difference in their lives with the Big Warm-up - a nationwide initiative starting October 29( )through November 30 to collect coats for those in need across the country.

Local Effort, National Inspiration

The Big Warm-up was inspired by a local initiative in Boston know as the Big Boston Warm-up. A public art installation is officially opening November 2 in Boylston Plaza at Prudential Center in downtown Boston. The installation will feature 768 life-sized figures, each representing 10 homeless women, men and kids in Boston. As coats are collected, the installation will be used to count down the number of coats collected.

"We were so inspired by the Big Boston Warm-up that we decided to roll out a national effort to collect coats for homeless people nationwide. Well not only have homeless people in Boston covered one coat at a time, but were hoping to cover as many homeless people facing a cold winter as possible," said Nick Coe, president of Lands End.

How to Donate

From October 29 until November 30, people are invited to donate a gently used coat at one of the 252 Lands End Shops at Sears or 13 Lands End Inlets® across the country. For each coat donation, Lands End will give 20% off the purchase of a new Lands End coat.

All donated coats will be given to the National Coalition for the Homeless for distribution via their network to homeless people near communities where they are collected. People can learn more about the Big Warm-up and track our progress at BIGWARMUP.COM.

"Donating a coat to help a homeless person doesnt just warm the hearts of those who will wear it, it also warms the hearts of those who donate," Coe adds. "We know that an entire country can be more powerful in helping others than just one organization alone. We hope the Big Warm-up will not only provide support for homeless people in our country, but will encourage a contagious spirit that brings the community together to help people in need."
