We’re Dead Heroes, an alt-rock project from the UK. The band is made up of Harry Young and Zoot Hill Valler. We’ve been friends for decades, and have been jamming with each other that entire time but never ended up working on anything substantial, minus a few demos here and there, until now! For this project, we’re pulling from a mix of influences. Everything from Queens of the Stone Age and Incubus, to Gorillaz, Kasabian, Tool, Kyuss…so mostly the darker, weirder corners of alternative rock, but no holds are barred whatsoever. Trust us on that.

What have you been up to this year & what can we expect in the coming months
This year has been about building Dead Heroes from the ground up and finishing our debut single Witch Doctor, which drops September 26th, 2025. That’s just the start! We’ve got a lot more music coming over the next year, including a really exciting cover song that we can’t wait to announce fully. Right now we’re a studio-only project, but we’re definitely keeping the door open for shows and festivals down the line.

What are your thoughts on AI and its effect on the music industry?
AI’s a double-edged sword. It’s a tool, and like any tool it can be used to inspire creativity or to cut corners. We don’t think it’ll ever replace the human side of music, the lived experiences, the mistakes, the raw emotion. But used right, it could help artists explore new sounds and ideas, stimulate inspiration and encourage creative expansion. The real danger is when it becomes more about convenience than expression. Generally, like anything else from the internet to the automobile, it’s both good and bad. It totally depends on how it’s used. That said, if anyone is relying on AI to fully create and curate the extremely human endeavour that is “art”, they need to get their priorities straight. Failing that, they can go fuck themselves.

Is streaming a good or bad thing?
Streaming is another mix between blessing and curse. It’s opened up the world so anyone can find your music and no one is prevented from listening and enjoying, which is incredible. Music isn’t just for those who can afford it any more. However, the economics are brutal. It’s really not set up to support smaller artists in a sustainable way, who only have the pay-per- stream revenue to rely on rather than any other contractual systems in place for artist income. It’s great for exposure, not so much for rent.

If you could play with any musician, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Ray Manzarek. That organ just does things to me (Harry). Dude knew how to turn a jam session into something really, fundamentally artistic. The Doors are such a huge influence to us, and probably most other rock bands that enjoy the weirder side of the map.

What are your 3 favourite moments in your career?
● Finishing Witch Doctor and realizing we’d hit exactly the sound we’d been chasing.
● The first time we heard one of our demos really come alive in the studio.
● Honestly, just deciding to start Dead Heroes. That moment of “let’s actually do this has already set so much in motion.

Who should we be listening to?
Black Orchid Empire, Mad Honey and, if I may say so myself, Solcura! Alt Rock is such a massive genre now, and the beauty of it is that it is, by its very nature, impossible to restrict or put into neat boundaries. Everything is on the table, let’s eat!

What can save our venues?

People showing up. It’s that simple, but also that complicated. Venues survive on people through the door buying tickets, drinks, food etc. That means supporting not just big touring acts but also your local scene. If you’ve got a favourite spot, go see shows there! Buy drinks, bring friends. Without that, venues can’t last. Without venues, we won’t last.

Where is your favourite venue?
Not a small venue by any means, but the Brixton Academy is a magic place. Some of the best shows I’ve ever seen were there, Lamb of God and Machine Head come to mind. If we’re talking about smaller venus, I’d have to shout out the Black Heart in Camden, and the
Bournemouth Bear Cave! Both awesome venues with the most amazing staff and they put on absolute clinics when it comes to shows.

Anything you wish to share?

Yeah! Witch Doctor is out September 26th, and it’s just the beginning. We’re treating this as a long-term project, with more music already in the works. Keep an eye on us because Dead Heroes is just getting warmed up.
