Los Angeles punk group Mermaid Island have officially released their self-titled debut album through No Dad Records, with a vinyl edition available through Anxious and Angry.
The record captures the fast, aggressive energy that has helped Mermaid Island build a strong following within the LA underground scene since forming in 2022. Combining high-speed punk rock with early-2000s pop-punk melodies and rough DIY production, the album balances chaotic intensity with sharp songwriting and hook-heavy choruses.
Tracks like “Freaks,” “Perfectly Happy,” and the recently released “Ice Cream” showcase the band’s mix of emotional frustration, dark humor, and restless energy. “Ice Cream” in particular leans into themes of burnout, anger, and pushing forward even when comfort feels impossible to find.
The song’s music video matches that attitude with a surreal storyline involving an automated ice cream truck, a denied order, and a full-scale rebellion through the streets of Los Angeles. The band eventually steals the truck and gives away its ice cream for free, turning the video into a chaotic anti-authority sprint fueled by punk absurdity.
Fronted by Canadian songwriter and vocalist Alex MacDonald, Mermaid Island built their reputation through loud and unpredictable live shows long before entering a recording studio. Much of the debut album was recorded live in only two days, helping preserve the raw atmosphere that defines the band’s performances.
Alongside MacDonald, the lineup includes guitarist Jesse Shafer, bassist Danté Thurkill, and drummer Jenna Terranova. Together, the group has become known for creating an energetic live environment centered around community, connection, and DIY culture.
Musically, Mermaid Island pull influence from punk, pop-punk, and east-coast Canadian rock while adding melodic vocal lines and occasional folk-inspired chord progressions into the mix.
Following the album’s release, the band continued a run of California shows, including appearances in Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Highland Park, alongside a hometown record release performance at The Slipper Clutch.
