Chicago punk band Sludgeworth have officially returned with Second Time Around, their first new studio album in 35 years. Released through Red Scare, the long-awaited record marks a new chapter for the influential group while staying true to the melodic punk sound that first earned them a loyal following in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
To celebrate the album's arrival, the band also released a music video for "Can't Change Yesterday." The song joins the previously shared single "Hold Steady," giving listeners another look at the record's energetic songwriting and heartfelt themes.
Second Time Around features 12 tracks and reunites founding members Dan Schafer and Dave McQuaid with guitarists Dave McLean and Adam White. The lineup also includes bassist Simon Lamb, known for his work with Violets and The Methadones. Max McQuaid, drummer for Feral Tact and the son of Dave McQuaid, also contributed additional instrumentation to the album.
Sludgeworth first formed in 1989 after Schafer and McQuaid departed Screeching Weasel. Drawing inspiration from bands such as Naked Raygun, Descendents, Ramones, and Effigies, the group developed a melodic punk style that helped shape the early evolution of pop punk before the genre became widely recognized.
Although the band broke up in 1993, Sludgeworth continued to build a strong reputation through later releases and growing appreciation from punk fans. Their 1995 compilation Losers of the Year introduced the band's music to new audiences, and a deluxe reissue in 2022 helped spark renewed interest in their catalog.
That momentum led to the band's reunion in 2023. Their comeback show at Chicago's Cobra Lounge sold out within minutes, followed by appearances at Riot Fest, performances with Smoking Popes, and the release of the Together Not Together 7-inch in 2024.
Now, with Second Time Around available everywhere, Sludgeworth continue their comeback with a full-length album that balances sharp melodies, driving rhythms, and the experience gained over decades. The band will spend the summer supporting the release with hometown record release shows in Chicago and tour dates alongside Teenage Bottlerocket.
