Florida underground rock outfit The Cadets have returned with a music video for “Pax Cadetia,” offering a preview of their forthcoming retrospective album Exile In Marginalia Vol. 4, due October 2 via Bar/None.

The release introduces a new chapter for a band whose roots stretch back to Florida’s mid-1990s underground. The Cadets began after Chuck Smyth, Pete Cochrane and Cash Carter bonded over college radio, underground surf music and the restless sounds surrounding their local all-ages scene. Their earliest recordings paired Carter’s frantic drumming with Smyth’s angular, nervous guitar work, finding melodic hooks inside an intentionally unpredictable framework.

That approach carried through releases including 1997’s The Search for the Edible Man and their 1999 self-titled album. The group later welcomed bassist Chad Matheny, now known for his work as Emperor X, alongside multi-instrumentalist Isaac Bear. Albums including Conditions on Alpha Atoll and On the Death of Science as a Major World Religion followed before the band eventually entered an extended hiatus.

Years later, Smyth and Bear began exchanging new recordings, ultimately bringing Carter back into the fold. With Matheny having relocated to Berlin, Donny Dusinberre joined on bass, completing the revived lineup.

“Pax Cadetia” arrives as a glimpse into the wonderfully crooked musical world collected on Exile In Marginalia Vol. 4. Across their catalog, The Cadets have combined nervous indie-rock energy, melodic hooks and experimental impulses with an imagination drawn toward science fiction, private reveries and unusual characters. Fans of Archers of Loaf, Polvo, Superchunk and Man or Astro-Man? should find plenty of familiar DNA without The Cadets ever settling neatly into one lineage.

The 12-track Exile In Marginalia Vol. 4 arrives October 2 through Bar/None.
