Montreal punk band Dutch Nuggets have shared a new music video for “Plastic Lives,” a track from their latest album Fishbowl’d!, out now through Thousand Islands Records.

At a time when generative AI is becoming increasingly common in music and visual art, Dutch Nuggets decided to head firmly in the opposite direction. The band created the “Plastic Lives” video themselves using childhood toys, action figures, Play-Doh, cutouts of their own faces and a camera, with Photoshop and After Effects used to bring the pieces together.

The intentionally rough, tactile approach fits the song’s title while giving the video a personality rooted in physical objects and hands-on creativity. Dutch Nuggets also filled it with references to their local Montreal punk scene and other pieces of music culture that have influenced them.

“Plastic Lives” appears as the sixth track on Fishbowl’d!, the band’s 12-song concept album. The record continues the fast-paced punk sound and three-part vocal harmonies Dutch Nuggets have developed since forming in Montreal in 2008.

The current lineup features Gabriel Malette on vocals and guitar, Francis Desaulniers on guitar and vocals, Pierre-Luc Wagner on bass and vocals, and François Lelièvre on drums.

Dutch Nuggets released their debut album Nervous Wreck in 2013, which was later reissued through Bells On Records in Japan and Bird Attack Records in the United States. In the years since, the group have become part of Quebec’s skate-punk scene, sharing stages with bands including Good Riddance, Belvedere, Brutal Youth, Pulley, Bigwig and 88 Fingers Louie.

With “Plastic Lives,” Dutch Nuggets extend the scrappy spirit of Fishbowl’d! beyond the music itself. Instead of reaching for polished digital shortcuts, they built something strange, funny and visibly homemade from the ground up.
