New Jersey alt-rock band The Clydes are back with a new single called “This Is The Night Shift.” It’s the second in a series of three songs the group is releasing this year through Mint 400 Records. The track arrives May 16 and follows their last release, “Sleeping On The Side Of Your Head.”
The Clydes have been around for years, and their sound mixes sharp post-punk energy with bright Britpop melodies. On this new song, the band uses buzzy guitar riffs, smooth synths, and a fast beat to create something tense and emotional. The song was inspired by guitarist Brian Johnson testing out a new amp. “I love small amplifiers,” Brian says. “They make everything sound like the records we grew up loving. ‘This Is The Night Shift’ was one of the first songs I played through my new amp.”
His brother, lead singer Brent Johnson, added lyrics and melody after hearing the early version. “The verse felt trapped, and the chorus felt like a release,” he said. “It reminded me of a Blur song. So I wrote the vocals to fit that feeling.” Brent says the lyrics came from an image in his head—someone sitting alone in their apartment with just one light on. “It’s about feeling unsure of the world around you, but still wanting to find a way out of that.”
Brian says Brent’s vocals bring an emotional edge to the track. “There’s an urgency to his voice,” he says. Bassist Andrew Orlando added a pulsing bass line, and the track was recorded with producer Adam Vaccarelli at Retromedia Sound Studios in Red Bank, New Jersey. Zakk Ekonomidis played drums on the recording.
After the third single comes out later this year, The Clydes will release a new EP collecting all three songs. Then, fans can expect the band’s fourth full album.
The Clydes continue to find ways to grow their sound while staying true to their roots. Their mix of emotional vocals, steady rhythms, and guitar-driven melodies makes them a standout in today’s alt-rock scene.
