The Emergency Response
On 'The Emergency Response', the six-song EP from Despistado, the foursome out of Canada (Saskatchewan, to be more exact) showcase a very pleasant, dynamic, and elaborate indie/post-hardcore/post-punk/noise rock sound that, if comparisons be needed, overall can be likened a bit to Mission of Burma, Dischord bands such as Fugazi and Rites of Spring, or even At the Drive-In, Black Cat Music, and From Safety to Where. Meanwhile, hints of Gang of Four and Wire are echoed most notably on the spazz-tastic, jittery, and nervous "HiFi Stereo", which features a heavy bassline and some staccato guitars here and there that bring to mind Gang of Four's "Natural's Not in It" or "Damaged Goods". On the record, the clean, unforced vocals of Dargan Harding are, for the most part, understated, only at times rising to a scream. By utilizing creative and artistic guitar riffs, hearty bass, expressive drum work that rises and falls brilliantly as the moods of the songs change, it appears these guys are doing their own thing, experimenting, rather than succumbing to trends, as they're not overly emotional, poppy, radio-friendly, or watered-down. Based on this showing, I can't wait to hear what these guys have in store for their debut full-length.
